A Fireman's view: 15 years later.

My brother; Benjamin Thomas Tolman

Ben's Facebook Post 9/11/16
Today I had the somber and sobering opportunity to do a 343 minute tribute to the 343 fire fighters killed on Sept 11, 2001. I stood at attention holding an American flag wearing my turnout gear, with a set of empty turnout gear next to me representing fallen fire fighters. I stood there for nearly 6 hours, 1 minute for every fire fighter killed that day. A couple of people stopped and stood with me for a few minutes. Most people honked or waved. I could tell who the veteran...s were because they would promptly give a dignified salute. Alot of people took pictures. I had many "thank you's" . It brought some people to tears. I am glad I was able to turn people's thoughts back to those who lost their lives that day, even just for that short time they saw me. I had 6 hours to think about it. I hope they saw the empty gear beside me and knew what it meant. I tried to imagine each fire fighter stepping into the gear next to me for one minute. I imagined the empty lockers at their stations because they would never return. I imagined their cars in the parking lots never to be claimed by their owners. I imagined empty beds and empty homes. Holes in the lives of so many others. Sons, Father's, daughters, mothers. Brothers, sisters. Lives shattered in a single day. Some of those people talked to me today. One guy was a pilot for United Airlines in the new York area that clear morning. Another person stopped who was in New York city and saw it all with his own eyes. One person shook my hand and told me more than half of his Fire Dept. died that day and wanted to send my photo to that department to let them know they weren't forgotten. Never will I forget. I will always remember. It is more real to me today after doing my small tribute and getting to meet people directly affected by that day. God Bless the United States of America.

Ben's Facebook Post 9/11/13
I woke up this morning 12 years ago to watch the news and weather before school. As a 6th grader I did not fully understand the events that unfolded before my e...yes on that television that day. All I knew was bad people attacked us and many people died. I remember watching my mother crying. Now as a almost 23 year old fire fighter, soldier, and american. I realize the events of that day forever altered the course of my life and all Americans. We live in a "post 9/11 America" the moments after the attacks we as Americans were united. But since America has become more divided than ever. Maybe today we can put all other titles, opinions, race, religion, and other dividing factors and stand today united as Americans for the honor of those who lost their lives that day. And those who answered the call, Many their last call, To help those in need. And the soldiers who sacrificed all to bring to justice those responsible for the cowardly attack that rocked this nation. Today WE are Americans! We will never forget 9/11/01.

The link below is a video someone took of my brother and submitted to their local news.

I couldn't be more proud of him, my brother Derek, and my many cousins and uncles who serve as firefighters and policeman. My husband who was a fireman, my brother in law who was in law enforcement. My Father in law, my Grandfather in law, my brother Ben, my brother in law who have all served in the armed forces. As well as my own Grandpa Greer who was a WII purple heart recipient and volunteer fireman. I am so blessed to have and had such great examples in my life.

And to my friend Alan, whose poem I found 5 years ago and still brings a tear to my eyes.

Let the world always remember,
That fateful day in September,
And the ones who answered duties call,
Should be remembered by us all.

Who left the comfort of their home,
To face perils as yet unknown,
An embodiment of goodness on a day,
When men's hearts had gone astray.

Sons and daughters like me and you,
Who never questioned what they had to do,
Who by example, were a source of hope,
And strength to others who could not cope.

Heroes that would not turn their back,
With determination that would not crack,
Who bound together in their ranks,
And asking not a word of thanks.

Men who bravely gave their lives,
Whose orphaned kids and widowed wives,
Can proudly look back on their dad,
Who gave this country all they had.

Actions taken without regret,
Heroisms we shall never forget,
The ones who paid the ultimate price,
Let's never forget their sacrifice.

And never forget the ones no longer here,
Who fought for the freedoms we all hold dear,
And may their memory never wane,
Lest their sacrifices be in vain.

Dollar Tree Duet

Every Tuesday Taylie has dance class from 1:45-2:30, so the boys and I will run errands or their favorite: exploring the Dollar Tree. They have so much fun finding little treasures and looking for something for "their best girls", their sisters. They open their car doors, help them out of the car and escort them and me into where ever we are going. They love to be gentleman. They walk my visiting teachers to their cars and open their doors too. It warms my heart to see them try to be gentleman. We have had to help them learn that it is okay to ask if they can help an elderly person down the hall at church or to their car. It is not okay to loudly tell them "You are old, let me help you" over and over again.

The Dollar Tree employees are so nice to my kids and love to ask them questions and how school is going. Just don't tell them they have the same face. I think they chased that employee half way around the building telling him that they are twins! It was pretty funny.

Two weeks ago while waiting to check out they heard the customer in front of us say the sleeping medicine her doctor put her on makes her forget her alphabet in English and in Spanish. And the next thing I know my boys are singing their ABC's at the top of their lungs for this women. She was very friendly and asked them to help her sing it so she could remember. So their duo became a trio and they started to gather quite the crowd. My children love to preform, they have never been the shy type and so of course they were delighted with the attention they were receiving. The lady thanked them for helping her remember. As the cashier started to ring up our purchases of Valentine decorations the woman thanked them again for singing with her and asked them to sing it one more time. They happily obliged and the trio put on one last performance of the Alphabet song which was greeted with a round of applause from the workers and a few other customers. Which pleased them very much and made their day.

While I am sure not all of the customers where happy to hear the alphabet. To this mom, whose babies where preemie, and have had a hard time learning their alphabet and recognizing letters it made my heart swell with joy. They have picked up so much these last three months and are enjoying Kindergarten so much. They hate when the weekend comes or holidays because it means they will miss school and their teacher Mr. Meilkhe who they just adore. I am so glad that they are loving school and can't believe that my little boys are old enough to be there.

We love you AJ and Austin and are so proud of the young men you are becoming, your caring for others, and how hard you have been working at school. You are both going to do great things if you keep on studying and being the gentleman you so love to be.

So if you are ever bored on a Tuesday afternoon between 1:45 and 2:30 just stop by Dollar Tree, because you never know when you might be serenaded by two of the most handsome boys you will ever see.

Worst Mom EVER!!!! Lydia's sheep ride

My dad is having trouble getting the video sent so I will tell the story and the video once we get it figured out.

I talked Lydia (and Alex to let her) into riding a sheep. I thought she would have fun. I remember doing it as a kid. I should have remembered she is my accident prone child.  She was excited. Until we got in line for her age group. Alex was at work so it was up to me to get her on the sheep and my parents took video and watched the other kids. Her friend Brogan was scheduled to ride before her but at the last moment he decided not to ride.
Just waiting in line

Lydia watching Brogan decide not to ride
So I helped her climb the gate and onto the sheep. She was VERY nervous. She also didn't want to lay down on the sheep because it had burrs in the wool. The gate operator and I showed her the burrs wouldn't bother her and how she need to hold the sheep with both hands tight around its neck and to squeeze her knees into its sides to help her stay on. She turned and looked at me just as they opened the gate and said Mom I am scared. I said to her Lydia the gate it open hold on tight it will be so fun I promise!!!
I could barely see her ride because of the crowd by the starting gates, I worked my way over to the arena entrance so I could pick her up there. As I walked I could her the crowd cheering with excitement. The other kids had fell of right out of the gate but by the way they were cheering I knew she was having a good ride. Then I hear them gasp.  Oh dear. I made it through the gate in time to see the rodeo helper pick her up from the middle of the sheep herd. She was crying and had lost a shoe. I meet them half way and carried her out onto the lawn. As I set her down I realized that she was bleeding from her mouth and that it had knocked some teeth loose. She said the sheep stepped on her face. I felt so guilty. I talked her into it. I told her it would be fun.

We made our way over to my brother Ben at the fire truck to have him give her lip a quick look and some gauze. Everyone told her what a great job she did. Alex showed up and looked at her lip too. Since the loose teeth were baby ones we thought she would be all right. This is why I didn't get pictures of the boys events. More mommy guilt. She didn't even place my guess is though she was in the top 5. Alex's fire buddies said they where so mad that she didn't place because she rode the best. And Brogan's dad (who also is on the department) wished he would have placed Brogan's helmet cam on Lydia to view the ride from her angle.

My family watching the rodeo

The next morning:

This is the little face I saw laying next to me when I woke up. She looked so miserable. More mommy guilt. Then she proceeds to tell me. I forgot to tell you that the sheep stepped on the my neck and hip. It hurts so bad I can't move my neck, the light hurts my eyes, my head hurts and I feel like I am going to throw up. (These are symptoms of a concussion or a brain bleed) Lets just say I had a mental mommy freak out.  I called her doctor and she got us in within the hour.
waiting in the room for the Doctor

I read her Alice in Wonderland with a British accent to try and cheer her up as we waited. She eventually asked me to turn the lights off and she laid down and asked me to finish the book.

It was decided that she would need xrays of her hips and a CT (Cat Scan) for her head and neck. Until we found out what the results were she was required to wear a soft c collar. She didn't like this one bit. I gave the Doctor my cell phone so she could call me with the results and she gave me hers so that if she got worse over the weekend I could give her a call.
waiting for tests
Thankfully nothing was seriously wrong, just a mild concussion and deep tissue bruising. Unfortunately she has to take it easy the rest of the summer and the pain will get worse before it gets better. She is happy not to be wearing the c collar, but very disappointed that she missed out on the bouncy houses at the fair on Saturday. More mommy guilt.

Alex has told me that none of our other children will be riding sheep. EVER. He said it is to expensive. When you add in all the doctor bills I guess he is right.

Have you ever pushed your kids to participate in something and then wish you hadn't?

Looking Great at 88! Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Happy Birthday Grandpa! I am sorry we didn't make it to your party last week because of car trouble, but believe me we wanted to be there. We miss seeing you and the kids miss playing with you.

I remember the first time I met you, you and Jon where having a contest to see whose tongue was longer. I knew then that this would be a great family to be apart of. You and Grandma welcomed me into the family with open arms! And my kids still talk about wanting to go see you and play in your yard.

Thank You for being such a great example to my hubby growing up and to all us "in-laws" too who have made their way into this family. I am so glad that we will be together as a family unit with Christ comes again. Your testimony has helped mine grow emensly, as did Grandma's. We miss her so much. I miss being able to temple work for all those names she submitted.

Any ways, I hope you had a great 88th birthday, and that you will have many more to share!

Love,
Alex, Tracie, and the kids

Our Crappy Camping Adventure!

Remember or visit to East Canyon last year over 4th of July?

Well this year Alex's family reunion was to be at East Canyon. We prepared much better this year, we bought a bigger tent, another hammock with a bug cover just in case, and a prep tent that keeps the bugs out while you eat or prepare food.
Our camp site

Taylie has been potty trained and so I didn't think it was a problem having her where panties. Well she had her first accident in 2 weeks while we were there. It was a huge mess. Luckily my SIL had a pull up and we put here in that. She kept it dry the rest of the time.

My boys and Alex at the pool
We had an exhausting day of playing at the playground, unpacking, swimming, and roasting marshmallows. We stayed up late, very late and we were so exhausted. The kids fell right to sleep as did Alex and I.

Sometime in the night AJ decided he needed the bathroom....unable to wake Alex and I because of the events of the day he decided to stick his little bum out the tent door and relief himself. All over the tent, inside the tent, his PJ's and hands. He then proceeded to climb back into the sleeping bag with his twin brother. I awoke to the most awful smell.....I asked if someone had an accident to which they replied Tay was poopy. The diapers and wipes where in the car and it was almost morning so I decided to wait to change her. That and without my contacts I am as blind as a bat. Taylie wasn't poopy.

Come morning we discovered his "gift". He and his brother were covered from head to toe. The sleeping bags, extra blankets and warm clothes we brought them were all ruined. So I stripped them down and walked the quarter mile to the showers only to find they were closed for cleaning. I begged the lady to let me in. I was ready go home. While I showered the boys (Austin was so tired he walked into the shower with his underwear still on) Alex cleaned the tent the best he could and started their clothes and sleeping bags in the laundry machines. Thank goodness we were at a camping resort. It took all day to get the smell out. With help from Julia and Kolya who took febreeze and zipped tied the sprayer down and threw it into our tent.
Uncle Jon and Taylie

I am glad we stayed though we had fun with the nieces and nephews, swimming, napping, and cooking over the campfire.

My nephew Caide and I

Alex managing the fire
We only had a few burned marshmallows. Alex (my fireman) was in charge of the fire and kept it nice although he did teach the kids to start it using bug spray. After one of the twins tried it he decided that wasn't such a great idea.

Saturday we went on Jet Ski's. Never again in my life! I saw my life flash before my eyes! The kids (but AJ) loved it.

All in all it started out crappy but we ended up having a great time.

Dance Marathon

So after getting the kids to clean the living room we had a dance marathon. We took turns showing off our skills which range from the boys Karate and "egg rolls", Lydia practicing for her dance recital  and Taylie copying her. And I even participated, it has been awhile but I must say I rocked the handstands, sommersaults, cartwheels and backbends. It was fun.....we will see how my muscles feel tomorrrow it has been at least 10 years since I have done that.

Camping, 'Coons, and Cops: Our 4th of July

We were invited up to East Canyon by Alex's brother Jon and his wife Steph. This would be our first time camping in a tent with all of our kids. We packed the van oh so carefully and were off! As you can see they were so excited!

We got their and unloaded the car and set up the 4 man tent for the six of us. Shouldn't be a problem, 4 small kids and 2 adults, we can make that work. And also our bug net tent to go over the picnic table. After a lecture to the kids about staying away from the fire pit and the raging river we were off for adventure! First obstacle to concur...the playground.

They had so much fun making new friends and running out their energy before dinner. We joined Steph's family up at their RV for a delicious dinner and then a round of miniature golf. No pictures of this as it took all 4 adults to help the kids golf. They had lots of fun.

We were so tired and the kids exhausted that we went to bed just after dark. I asked Alex about the boxes of food left on the picnic table and he told me we would be fine that it was enclosed in the net tent. And so began our long LONG LONG night. Who would have guessed that little miss Taylie would be claustrophobic. She SCREAMED. AND SCREAMED. AND SCREAMED. ALL NIGHT LONG. Out! OUT! OUT MAMA OUT! She finally fell asleep with her little face pressed against the open window. It was so sad. What made it worse though was when the other kids got cold and we tried to shut the window. It started all over again. The next morning we awoke to find that Raccoon's had gotten into our food tent and they love snickers, Doritos's, and pop tarts. I am just glad it wasn't a bear.
We spent the day in the pool and the splash pad. It was so much fun even though the adults did come away with sun burns.
That night we talked long about what was the best way to get Taylie to sleep. Alex brought his hammock and we decided that he would sleep in the hammock with her. The problem with that was the only trees we could find close enough together were about 150 feet away from our tent. But for her sake and that of our neighbors we decided that was best. That night we decided to wear her out so after dinner at the RV with Steph's family I took her on a walk around the RV area. She loved it! She ran and ran her little legs and when she was barked at by a HUGE Doberman. She stopped in her tracks looked at the dog and said: SIT!
The dog was so dumbfounded that he did that he sat. And Taylie just went on her merry little way. It was so cute. And she was so happy not to be in the tent that as soon as Alex laid down in the hammock she was out. We left early the next morning to enjoy the parades, fair, and fireworks.

The next day was my work party at a local swimming pool. We had so much fun. Free dinner, free drinks, free cotton candy, free snow cones (my favorite part of summer!) As we were walking to the parking lot to our car both boys had accidents. So we stripped them naked and but them in the Jeep, they looked so cute and we took video and pictures of them. And of the girls, Taylie loved the cotton candy. We joked about getting pulled over and the cop seeing the naked boys in the back and the explaining we would have to do. We pulled out of the parking lot and headed home. Not 30 seconds after leaving the parking lot I hear a Whoop Whoop and look in the mirror and see lights flashing behind us. Alex pulls over, he is just in his swim trunks and sandals. His wallet was in the back by the naked little boys. I am stifling my giggles as he has to get out and find his ID and talk with the cop. Apparently we were going 10 over but because it is an area we aren't familiar with we didn't know. The cop was nice and just gave us a warning, best of all he didn't even notice the naked little guys in the back.
Here is a picture of Aunt Steph with the boys a week before at a local park that was having a fair, the fire department was using their ladder truck to help cool people off.

St. George Family Reunion

Remember our family vacation to Bear Lake?
We swore we would never go on another vacation again.

However this summer my parents bought all of us kids and our families
tickets to see Tuacahn's presentation of Disney's The Little Mermaid.
It was amazing! I was a little worried about it starting so late but
the three oldest kids did great! It is Lydia's favorite movie,
and with the exception of Austin who fell asleep the last 10 minutes
couldn't keep their awe struck eyes of the stage.
And Taylie had fun with her cousin Pyper at the condos with a babysitter.

Tuacahn's presentation of The Little Mermaid

The next days adventures started with a trip to the temple,
swimming, and a little off roading.
Us in our Jeep and my brother Ben in my dad's Toyota Corolla.
I made the comment that I was so glad we were in the car because of the rattlesnakes.
Lydia asked what they were to which we told her they were very Poisonous snakes
and that the poison had killed people so not to play with them.
5 minutes later.
Ben and Alex fixing the car, Lydia terrified wouldn't leave their side.
The boys enjoyed playing on the rocks, see how close we were to
civilization? So close yet so far.

The next day before heading home we visited the county fair.

The kids viewing and feeding the animals.
Taylie called every animal Sadie after our dog.

They even got to ride a horse for the first time.

And to sit on some other animals too.

But the Best part of the day was this:

My Dad, All American Grandpa, and Cowboy.
It was a wonderful vacation spent with my wonderful family.
Can't wait till next year. Still will be a few years probably
before Alex and I try one on our own again.
But with family helping family, everything is possible.

Katja

Alex's cousin from Russia came to visit us in October. It was alot of fun, we went to a Haunted House with his brother Kolya. She had never been to one before and enjoyed it. We took the kids bowling and shopping and to the park.

Taylie and Katja

She also helped us make Pelmeni. It is a delicious Russian food, kind of like Raviolli or dumplings. It is Alex's favorite but is a very time consuming process. She shared her mom's receipe which was great because it was exactly the way he remebered growing up. All of the one we found online were never quite the same.

Alex making Pelmeni on his mission.

We also took her to Park City to see the 2002 Olympic Museum and tour. She enjoyed it, the last time she was here we took her to Temple Square and a drive through the mountains. We try to find different things to do with her each time she come.

From back to front: Katja, Lydia, AJ, Austin

Katja

It is so fun to have her in our home. It allows Alex to connect with his birth family and also a chance to use his Russian. It is funny because by the end of four days he could not tell if he was speaking English or Russian. He would inter mingle the words or just start speaking to me in Russian. I would look at him funny and he would become frusterated. She is a very nice person, we get along very well even though I speak very little Russian and she speaks very little English. She is always kind enough to bring us pictures of his sister and our niece and nephew and other family members who we have not had a chance to meet yet. She brings many wonderful gifts from them and we send many back with her. It is wonderful that he is still in contact with them and also wonderful that he has a very loving family here. We are so grateful to his parents for being willing to adopt him and Kolya and for introducing him to the church. It gave him so many opportunities that he would not have had. Not many almost 12 year olds are adopted and we are eternally grateful that they did. We  love you for it!
