Tonsilectomy x2

The boys got there tonsils out today. They have been talking about it for a little over a week. They were so excited! They would tell everyone they saw. Truthfully it made me feel a little guilty becauseI knew they did not understand what was going to happen. In my mind I have dreaded today. They would find out what surgery and having their tonsils out was about. Alex and I talked with them a lot about what was going to happen today but being 3 they just didn't understand. It was so much worse (and better) than what I expected.

AJ (red) and Austin (blue) waiting for surgery.
They played and laughed. The staff and other patients were talking about how cute they are. AJ saw Dr Richards who was going to do the surgery and said "That's my guy friend I need to talk to him" It was very cute.

Then it was time for Austin to go back, he held my hand and kept saying "Mommy don't leave me, take me back" I looked at the nurse and she shook her head no. My heart sank. I had to hand my baby over.
I heard him crying, everyone heard him crying, and I felt like everyone had their eyes on me. He cried until they put him under.

I put on a brave face and smiled at AJ. He was watching very close and he was scared. He did not play anymore, but sat on Alex's lap for a while and then came and sat behind me so they could not find him. Being the Big Brother that he is he kept telling us that he needed to go check on his brother. He has done this ever since they were babies, if someone else had Austin then AJ would strain his head and whole bodyto keep an eye on him. It is very sweet.

Dr Richards came in and told us that Austin did very well. AJ asked his "guy friend" if he could see
his brother. I didn't think they would let him because he was still in recovery and they usually don't let you
until they are awake. But Dr Richards looked at his little face and saw how important it was and picked AJ up and said "I will take you to see your brother." He carried him to recovery and AJ rested his head on his shoulder the whole way there and back. We couldn't go to far in but we were able to see him sleeping on the bed with a half dozen nurses taking care of him. Dr Richards took us back to the pre op room and said we were waiting on anesthesia to be ready.  AJ then told me he had changed his mind and didn't want to have surgery. I held him and talked quietly with him until they came.

I thought Austin leaving was hard, but AJ new what was coming now and started screaming "No, Mama! NO!" "Don't let them take me don't leave me!" Tears streamed down his face as the nurse tried to take him from me. His little hands grabbed my shirt and wouldn't let go. Little boys who don't want surgery are very strong. It took the nurse pulling and me prying his finger off my shirt with help from Alex. It broke my heart. I tried not to cry after the doors shut. Everyone was watching again and I could feel the sympathy from them. Alex and I were ushered into the waiting area until we could go to see Austin.

Recovery was as to be expected. They were in pain and crying because of the IV and the Anesthesia. But after some juice and Popsicles they were ready to go home.

In the car on the way home.
By the time we got home Austin was walking around and talking quite a bit. (Well the best he could anyway) AJ got sick once we pulled in the driveway but thanks to my lightening fast reflex I am happy to report that none of it got on him or the car.  Lydia, Taylie, and my Mom spent the time we were gone making get well and welcome home banners along with balloons and stars. It was very colorful and very glittery and very much loved by the boys and us. I will post some pictures of that tomorrow, I have been a little to busy to day to get the right pictures. By the time I had a chance it was to dark. Lydia kept telling my Mom over and over that she "Just wants them to feel the love" she felt very sad for them as she has had some oral surgery before and "knew the pain they would be in" She spent much of the day taking care of them. She is such a blessing.

The boys at home enjoying Popsicles.
We have watched every Toy Story and Barney movie we have. I was able to talk them into watching Vin Diesel in the Pacifier which they enjoyed and I enjoyed not having to watch Barney again. They have been feeling much better this evening. They have ate two whole boxes of Strawberry Jello and to many Popsicles to count. They keep asking for foods they can't have like cereal and bread and chips. They have enjoyed homemade soup from my Mom though which is always a treat from the canned soups and SO much better.

All in all today was OK. Lots of love and support from family and friends. The boys playing, and not seeming to be in to much pain (thank you lortab elixer). I hope it continues this way and that they recover quickly. It was also wonderful to see that Dr's and nurses still care for the littlest and how important things are to them. It was a blessing that is for sure.

Azalea had her tonsillectomy last year. It was not easy. I think about day 5 was the worse. Good luck.
